Teaching Experience – Preschool

Art Teacher, Laurel Hill Nursery School, San Francisco, CA                                                                       2005 - present

Teach art at San Francisco’s oldest cooperative Nursery School with over 70 families, to children ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 5 1/2 years old. My art curriculum is process orientated, combining a variety of mediums to give the children a broad artistic experience. We do clay, painting, printing, 3D projects and always create pieces that get auctioned off at the annual fundraiser.

Photography Workshop Teacher, The Little School, San Francisco, CA                                              2010 - present

Taught photography to Pre Kindergarten class. Showed the children my commercial portfolio and talked about how the pictures were made and briefly how a camera works. Children then took their own photographs, learning about perspective and light.

Art Teacher, Bay Area Discovery Museum, Marin, CA                                                                                 1997 - 2001

Designed and implemented a series of classes for preschool children and their parents, meeting for an hour once a week. Classes were process orientated and encouraged parent and child to experiment and cooperate in a fun and creative way.

Teaching Experience - Elementary School

Artist In Residence for Leap...Imagination in Learning, San Francisco, CA                                           Spring 2011

Longfellow Elementary School

Taught ceramics to 4 third grade classes once a week for 7 weeks.  Introduced classes of 23 students (92 all together) to basic hand building skills. We made pinch pots, breakfast bowls and animal sculptures. The projects were glazed and fired off site. 5 pieces will be displayed at the De Young Museum this spring.

Fairmont Elementary School

Taught ceramics to 3 Kindergarten classes once a week for 8 weeks.  Introduced classes of 23 students to basic hand building skills. We made spring nests, pinch pots, portrait slabs and animal sculptures. The projects were glazed and fired off site. Clay exploration was a big part of the class and as much as possible kids were encouraged to learn through play.

.

Artist In Residence, Camp Mather, Yosemite CA                                                                                          Summer 2011

Will teach art to children and adults for 4 hours a day for a week as part of San Francisco’s Mather family camp located near Yosemite National Park. Will create projects inspired by nature to cross multiple ages, using a very limited materials budget.

Teaching Experience - Middle & High school

Artist In Residence, Artspan at Somarts, San Francisco, CA                                                                      1998

Taught a mixed media photography project for at risk teens. Kids learnt to take photographs and then manipulated their images, added text and created a narrative project that was displayed at San Francisco’s City Hall. Some students sold work.

Photography Teacher, Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center, San Francisco, CA                                                                                         1998

Taught photography to children ages 7-13. Introduced the kids to semiotics so they learnt not only to take pictures, but also how to read them and especially concentrate on media usage. Project lasted over the summer session and culminated in a community exhibition.

Art Instructor & Developer, Progirl, ARTSMART, San Francisco, CA                                                                                                              1997 - 1998

Funded by San Francisco Art Commission, classes were specifically developed for teenage girls, culminating in a public art commission. The goal of the project was to make public the voice of an under represented group of teens. Working with diverse groups of girls over several months with 4 other artists, a strong visual media project developed, finally resulting in back lit posters displayed in advertising kiosks on Market Street during the Christmas shopping season.

“Ciara’s approach and competence in working with young children has helped make art an essential part of our play based nursery school”

Maria Chew, Director

Laurel Hill Nursery School

“Ciara has done workshops with our class of 5-year-olds over the past several years, and it has always been a huge favorite with the children. Ciara brings colorful and thought-provoking materials and introduces the concepts of photography and workings of the camera in very age-appropriate clear ways. She is patient and engaging and seeks lots of input from the children. Her activities are fun and our students are left with feelings of competence in using a camera, expertise about photography and a desire to take more pictures!”
